I wish I would have kept track of how many times I’ve been asked ‘why’ I became a dentist. To be honest, it’s not a straight forward answer.

I wasn’t one of those people that ‘always wanted to be a dentist’ as a child. As a matter of fact, like most people I never really enjoyed a visit to the dentist and had many visits at an early age that were quite ‘memorable’. Over the years however, I developed an attraction to the biology/medical world and remember telling my mother, who had a nursing career that spanned over forty years, that I was interested in medicine. From her hospital experience, she definitely gave me some insider perspective into the sometimes not-so-glamorous world of doctoring. Perhaps it was then that I considered alternatives, such as dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, veterinary medicine and even optometry. I knew I was drawn to the health-care field…
